Rain is part of London life, but it needn’t spoil your plans. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or live round the corner, here are 12 indoor ideas I’d happily recommend to couples, families and solo travellers.

What to do on a rainy day in London?

Visit free museums such as the Natural History Museum or British Museum which can be an educational experience, explore covered markets like Borough and Leadenhall, enjoy traditional afternoon tea or snacks, shop at Covent Garden or Westfield, or catch a West End matinee. Book ahead and keep attractions close together.

    7. Afternoon tea– Scones, sandwiches and cakes make the ultimate rainy-day treat. Fortnum & Mason and The Ritz are classics, but smaller tearooms are often cheaper and more relaxed making them a more affordable and relaxed option.

    8. Borough Market and Leadenhall Market– Borough is largely covered and ideal for a long lunch, while Leadenhall’s Victorian glass roof is a beautiful place to explore on a rainy day.

    9. Covent Garden and Seven Dials Market– Browse the market halls, grab street food, then pop into the London Transport Museum without going far.

    10. Westfield London or Westfield Stratford City– Shops, restaurants and a cinema under one roof, ideal for groups and families to enjoy and spend quality times together.

    Entertainment and Cosy Corners

    11. A West End matinee– Afternoon shows are a brilliant way to spend a wet day, especially for couples and friends.

    12. A cosy café or pub– Find a fireplace in Bloomsbury, Soho or Notting Hill and let the shower pass. Families might prefer SEA LIFE London Aquarium or an escape room.

Tips for a Wet London Day

    • Book ahead– Theatre tickets, afternoon tea and popular exhibitions sell out, especially at weekends.
    • Cluster your stops– Pair South Kensington’s museums, or Covent Garden with the London Transport Museum.
    • Use the Tube– Pay contactless and check Transport for London for disruptions before you leave.
    • Pack smart– A compact umbrella, waterproof jacket and comfy shoes help.

A rainy day often becomes the one you remember most as it can be enjoyable or hectic. Pick two or three nearby spots, leave room for a spontaneous tea stop, and enjoy London’s indoor side.
